Okay okay.. so this is going to be a long post, but hear me out my friend! There are “chemicals” in everything.. but not everything is serving you!! Did you know that some chemicals can actually have a negative effect on your health? ALSO.. did you know that the air inside our home is 2-5 times MORE polluted than the air outside!? Yep, you read that right! This is straight from http://ewg.org go check it out!! So let’s get to it… here are {some} of the chemicals on the AVOID LIST!

  1. BLEACH.

My first thought when I read this was “I thought bleach was supposed to kill germs and make my house cleaner.. not more toxic!?” But boy was I wrong. Here’s the deal with bleach – they are highly toxic and can create a chloramine gas that is crazy dangerous when mixed with ammonia. If you see “ammonium hydroxide” on the back of your cleaners… throw it out! It can cause severe breathing issues, respiratory issues, skin irritation, burns, etc.

When buying toilet cleaners, avoid cleaners that contain hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, sodium or potassium hydroxide, or ethanolamines. These chemicals can cause extreme skin irritation, burns, and even lung irritation!

Kick out those fake fragrances y’all! I may have shed a tear or 2 when I realized I needed to kick out the things with fake fragrances. But let me tell you, my health is THANKING ME. Plus I turn on that diffuser and don’t even miss any of my old toxic junk! What to avoid: room sprays, candles, scented cleaning or laundry products and anything that doesn’t disclose exactly what their “fragrance” ingredients are on the product label. WHY!? Not only can it trigger allergies but it often contains endocrine disruptors!! Another endocrine disruptor: phthalates… go ahead and put that on the “avoid list” too!!

Check those labels and kick out anything with triclosan. It has been linked to increased allergen sensitivity and disrupts your thyroid function, even at low levels.

So here’s the kicker y’all. When I first started peeking at what was in my products, I realized that the products I thought were “clean” were packed full of junk and rated an F on ewg.org. That is called “green washing” and companies do it ALL the time. So what to look out for… if a company displays they have “pure essential oils” in their products but they do not grow their own plants… I would stay away! This could be a way to make consumers believe they have “healthy” ingredients when it really is a way for them to refrain from listing the chemical fake fragrances that are actually being used in their products.
